The Falling figure undergoing a metamorphosis. This piece is part of a series titled The Fall, it allows for interpretation from the Biblical's The Fall of man to a more trivial but resonating, modern use of falling when one falls in love and falling from a position of high economic and/or social status. My interpretation is layered as the figures are not always only falling but undergoing a (natural) metamorphosis.
With their heads portrayed as rocks, it is to say that they fell due to being hard-headed. The figures are portrayed in an upward position as to hint at the possibility of hope, growth, and redemption. There are five figures because the number five is commonly referred to as the number of humanity. Human beings have five fingers, five toes, five appendages (if the head is included), five senses, and five major systems of the body.
This figure has probably fallen but more so is in a state of lethargy and Sloth, failing to do things that he or she should do. At a deeper level, I want to represent the image as a sort of badge or seal to represent sloth as a sin. ("...in antiquity was that laziness or lack of work that was simply a symptom of the vice of apathy or indifference, particularly an apathy or boredom with God.")
